<<Include(Tag/Deletion)>> There is a new version of ubuntulite. It is currently in beta testing. It will be based on open-box, with fbpanel, and the slim display manager. We want it to run lighter than the old version. As always the goal is to run on Win9x era machines with 32 to 68 mb of ram. Following this how-to will install the latest version of ubuntulite. "A word to the wise: This distribution is undergoing a major overhaul. While this should work, problems may arise. Therefore, I strongly recommend that this is not used by beginners or on mission-critical computers. *If you have already installed feisty, skip steps one -three. Step One: Download and Burn the Ubuntu Feisty Netinstall CD" The Netinstall is avaliable here Step Two: Install a command-line system Step Three: Boot the computer and log in. Step Four: Download the install script wget http://download.tuxfamily.org/ubuntulite/install-ubuntulite-0.6.sh Step Five: Run the install script sudo sh install-ubuntulite-0.6.sh Step Six: Reboot into your new ubuntulite system If you need help with ubuntulite beta, drop in at the new project website or mailing list. * If you would prefer to install the old ubuntu-lite. Here are the instructions.

At this point I want to thank Blackpaw for providing us repositories. There is a torrent image available at wolftech's website, but if you can't burn the cd and have to install from a regular shipitfree Ubuntu cd, this is also very easy. 1. First you have to install Ubuntu on your computer. Boot from the normal Ubuntu Breezy Badger 5.10 CD and at the boot: prompt, enter server. With all versions dapper and after, you need the server cd.

boot: server

With the server cd just hit enter at boot. The rest of the install will be similar to a normal install. When it is done, you will have a very basic system: networking, apt and a shell. 2. When the install is done, reboot and log in and edit your sources.list:

$ sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

3. Enable universe by removing the # from :

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper universe

add the following repository to the end.

deb http://blueeyedcreature.net/ubuntu ./

Save and close 5. Refresh apt's cache (is cache the right term here?) and start the ubuntu-lite-desktop install:

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-lite-desktop

If this site goes offline it can be installed manually Click this link to download ubuntu-lite-desktop preferably to your home directory. then from a command line in a terminal window

sudo dpkg -i ubuntu-lite-desktop*

If you get dependency errors.

sudo apt-get -f install

After you are done restart your machine and you will find your self in WDM login manager. Login as user and you have a working Ubuntu Lite system with IceWM as window manager installed. You will also have many other useful applications installed. Check for whole list at the ubuntulite.org wiki This site no longer exists. Ubuntu-lite has become a community project of the Ubuntu-lite mailing list. If you want to help, or want to keep up with the latest developements, visit the list. A new version for Feisty Fawn is currently being developed, and we would love to hear from you. For help go to the ubuntu-lite list. This site has moved. The new list. There are other nice things at the list, like xvesa a tinyx server that allow ubuntu to run with as little as 16 mb of memory, and the icebuntu theme, which looks like the default gnome theme in regular ubuntu. mtPaint, which is a nice full featured but lite paint program, for computers that run "too slowly" with the gimp.
