Introduction
This page describes a network installation of Ubuntu 6.06.1 on Sun Fire X4100 and X4200 servers.
Netboot
This install uses the netboot method as described in Installation/Netboot.
Pre-installation
Before the starting installation process:
- Make sure the BIOS is not configured to boot off the ATAPI CD-ROM. Instead, it should boot off the hard disk.
- Make sure the BIOS boot order for the hard disks is what you expect from your hardware.
- Make sure to note the first hard disk for the next section.
Installation
During the installation process, special care must be taken regarding the hard disk devices.
- Make sure to install /boot on the first disk of the BIOS boot order noted in the previous section.
- Make sure to note the device name for the next section. For example, it might be /dev/sdi.
Post-installation
After the installation process:
- Before rebooting, press F12.
- In the steps of the install process, select Execute a shell.
- In the Execute a shell window, select <Continue>.
- In the shell, change to the /target root directory:
# chroot /target
- In the grub configuration, correct the root device name. Simply open the file /boot/grub/menu.lst with your favorite editor and substitute each instance of the device name noted in the previous section with "/dev/sda" (without the quotes).
That should be it!
