''scribus-ng'' can be installed in parallel with the ''scribus'' package from the official Ubuntu repositories. It should be noted that packages from this software channel are not supported by Ubuntu and may be unstable development versions, and so may not function as expected. Parent page: Applications list

Ubuntu includes a collection of powerful 'office' applications by default. This document takes you on a quick tour of the features of the default office programs, and covers some of the useful extras you can install too.

Default Packages

This section provides an overview of the selection of office applications installed by default with Ubuntu.

OpenOffice.org Suite

OpenOffice.org is an open-source office suite which is compatible with other major office suites (such as Microsoft Office). Open'Office consists of several commonly used office-type applications, which provide hundreds of different features. The applications are highly integrated, and data from one application can be copied and edited in another with great ease.

General features

Open'Office applications share many of the same basic features. You can save your work from any Open'Office program into the PDF format, which is commonly used in both print and web publishing. All of the applications support spell checking, and share the same extended help system which includes many easy guides describing how to accomplish common (and some more advanced) tasks. You can also write small scripts called macros in several different programming languages for any of the Open'Office programs.

Writer (Word Processor)

Writer is Open'Office's word processing application. It offers many advanced features, such as the ability to connect to a variety of databases, while still making the basic of word processing easy. From simply changing the font colour to applying advanced page styles, Writer can handle pretty much any word-processing task you throw at it. You can even use Writer as a simple web-page designer.
