特色

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS的-{zh-hans:屏幕; zh-hant:螢幕;}-截圖，背景桌布為*Ubuntu的黎明* ，此為其中一個預設安裝的桌布，供使用者選擇採用。

系統管理

Ubuntu十分重視系統安全，所有系統相關的任務均需使用Sudo指令是它的一大特色，這種方式比傳統的以系統管理員帳號進行管理工作的方式更為安全，此為Linux、Unix系統的基本思維之一。^[2]同時，Ubuntu也相當注重系統的易用性，標準安裝完成後，一開機就可以投入使用，簡單地說，就是安裝完成以後，使用者無需再費神安裝瀏覽器、Office套裝程式、多媒體播放程式等常用軟體，一般也無需下載安裝網卡、音效卡等硬體設備的驅動(但部份顯示卡需要額外下載的驅動程式，且不一定能用套件庫中所提供的版本)；Ubuntu的開發者與Debian和GNOME開源社區合作密切，其各個正式版本的桌面環境均採用GNOME的最新版本，通常會緊隨GNOME項目的進展而及時更新（同時，也提供基於KDE、XFCE等桌面環境的衍生版本）。Ubuntu與Debian使用相同的deb -{zh-hans:软件包; zh-hant:軟體套件;}-格式，可以安裝絕大多數為Debian編譯的-{zh-hans:软件包; zh-hant:軟體套件;}-，雖然不能保證完全相容，但大多數情況是通用的。

開發意念

Ubuntu計劃強調易用性和國際化，以便能為儘可能多的人所用。在發佈5.04版時，Ubuntu就已經把萬國碼（UTF-8 Unicode）作為系統預設編碼，用以應對各國各地區不同的語言文字，試圖給使用者提供一個無亂碼的交流平台。它在語言支援方面，算是Linux發行版中相當好的。

在發行初期，Ubuntu會提供一張安裝光碟與一張用來預覽的Live CD。待Ubuntu 6.06 LTS發佈時，原來的Live CD除預覽外，還可以用來安裝系統，即變更為Desktop CD；而原有的安裝光碟繼續使用文字安裝界面，並改名為Alternate install CD。Ubuntu的後續版本均沿襲了這一變動。

破解DVD加密的解密軟體DeCSS。
多媒體編碼與解碼程式庫，如Windows Media。
部份廣受歡迎的以私有版權形式發佈的瀏覽器擴充套件，如Adobe（合併前為Macromedia）出品的Shockwave（無Linux版本）和Flash——其授權（EULA）禁止Linux發行版將其收錄在光碟或映像檔中。Ubuntu 把這個套件指定為 multiverse 中的一個-{zh-hans:软件包; zh-hant:軟體套件;}-（flashplugin-installer），系統接到安裝這個-{zh-hans:软件包; zh-hant:軟體套件;}-的請求時，會自動從Adobe的網站下載Linux版Flash套件並安裝。
