@dtl131@ To quebecman: The build-essential package is already listed. AFAIK, OSS doesn't use dkms, but has internal scripts to rebuild modules after a kernel update. fakeroot and dh-make may be needed to build a .deb, but aren't needed to build OSS from source.
@braingram@
For 'Stopping ALSA' instead of running this (which dangerously changes the blacklist file permissions and makes the file rather ugly):
<pre><nowiki>
sudo chmod 776 /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
sudo cat /lib/linux-sound-base/noALSA.modprobe.conf >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
</nowiki></pre>
Isn't it equivalent to run:
<pre><nowiki>
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-oss
sudo ln -s /lib/linux-sound-base/noALSA.modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-alsa
</nowiki></pre>
I haven't tested this myself, but it seems safer and possibly more thorough.
@dtl131@ To braingram: Unfortunately, that does not blacklist all the needed ALSA modules. There probably is a more Debian policy-compliant way to accomplish this task, but I wanted something that could be quickly copied/pasted.

Discussion

@quebecman@ The "make" command returns a series of errors which leads me to believe I may be missing packages that should be installed. This has happened before where I read instructions on how to install ATI drivers reading Ubuntu docs. Then found another page where instructions were given to install other packages not mentionned on said Ubuntu doc. So perhaps the following should be installed ? build-essential fakeroot dh-make debconf dkms @cesium@ I've changed the page to link to the testing tarball, since the mercurial repository doesn't respond today... I wonder if Ubuntu users simply overloaded it :- ) @cesium@ Well, it works now. Must have been a temporary glitch. I've reinserted the mercurial repo method. @seajey@ Started translation into russian, it could be seen hear OpenSoundRU @dtl131@ To quebecman: The build-essential package is already listed.
