Mission Statement
Why do we help in the first place
Why do we help new users to solve the issues they encounter? Why do we spent hours with searching, trying, and experimenting? Why are we so zealous and so committed? Because the idea behind all this work is worth it. Because we sense and feel there is something greater than only kernels, updates and packages. Because Ubuntu is not an Operating System. It is a way of life. It is a link to the world. It is a link to people. It is a worldwide connection, based on such principles like Respect, Freedom and Collaboration. (see Code of Conduct )
How can you get help
Assuming you have dared the most important step, that is you have realized you want to use Ubuntu as your daily operating system, you will probably ask, "What now? Am I alone?" And here you will be struck for the first time by the immense power Ubuntu has to offer. Read on here: HowToGetHelp
Quality of Help Enhancement
Some thoughts for helpers and the users seeking help: If you have an idea or a suggestion how the Beginners Team can enhance the support feel free to visit the BTMeetings Page and add your suggestion to the agenda list. It will be then discussed during the next BTMeeting.
Types of Problems
After reading some (quite a lot of threads) in this Absolute Beginners Section I realize there are two sorts of threads.
- Recurring Issues
- Unique Issues
The Unique Issues must be read as if it were your first day in the Linux World. You must forget every standard procedure and search for new ways, start being creative. Ask intelligent new questions which will guide the new user and also you as the helper to the core of the problem. The Unique Issues are the threads which will bring you knowledge to a higher level. Because when you stand still, not moving, only copy this paste that, your brain also makes a break. Sometimes this is very relaxing. But it should not become your target state. But there are also the Recurring Issues. Issues which are well known by the helpers which spent some time in this forum. This is the salient point of this thread. As the seeker of help start your thread with some input, so we can suggest a solution based on facts not on stories.
